Coaching Focuses on Everyday Goals

Recovery coaching is practical support focused on goals you want to bring into daily life. A conversation might involve routines, resources or how to follow through on a priority you have named. The coach works with your goals, strengths and resources.

Coaching is not clinical treatment. If you are trying to understand the difference, ask what a coaching session would focus on and how the role differs from a therapist’s. Your reason for seeking support is a useful place to begin that discussion.

Therapy Is Clinical Care

Therapy addresses mental health and substance use clinically. It can include discussion of feelings, experiences, relationships and patterns that concern you. A therapist considers the clinical work alongside what you want care to address.

Coaching and therapy are different roles, not competing measures of how serious your concern is. You can have both, with a clear conversation about the purpose of each. Ask what information you would want each provider to understand and how to keep the focus of their roles clear.

Compare Through Your Questions

01

What Do You Want to Work On?

Name a practical goal or a concern you want to understand. You may be seeking help with both. Describe each instead of deciding that one matters more.

02

What Would Sessions Address?

Ask a coach about goal-focused support and a therapist about clinical care. The explanation should make sense in ordinary terms. You can ask for an example of the focus without expecting a promised result.

03

What if You Want Both?

Bring that question to the providers you are considering. Discuss what each role would address. Clear expectations help distinguish practical coaching from therapy.
